Blogged To The Eyeballs
Ah yes my dear friends the ever popular question. I’ve had many a banter about this topic and this is my usual response: (For this Royal tale the Designer has become your stylist!?)
Imagine you’re about to meet the Queen. You wouldn’t wear jeans would you? So, the designer puts you in a black suit, clips a purple pansy into your top pocket and tells you that you are not allowed to reach out to shake the Queens hand unless she reaches first. ‘Great thanks for the tip’, you say, and off you twoddle.
Standing in line the queen finally reaches you and looks at you. She doesn’t reach out her hand but says, ‘what a lovely flower,’ bemused you say thank you. ‘Did you know that it’s my favourite flower and colour?’ ‘No I didn’t’ you reply. ‘Well it is, so tell me what do you do?’ As you chat people start to wander and stare as to how you’ve managed to engage the Queen in a longer than usual meet and greet affair. Before she leaves she reaches out her hand and you reach out yours. She moves on the line while you stand tall and proud wandering what just happened.
A designer’s job is to get your foot in the door, make you stand out & engage the consumer, to dig deeper than the face value of things that just look pretty.
Programmers & designers hate each other
Here’s another analogy that I like using on programmers, because we always squabble about whose more important;
‘Creating an online business is like building a car. Building the engine and chassis is the programmer’s job. The body work is the designer’s job. Both need each other in order to sell the car to the right consumer. Stick that in your exhaust pipe and smoke it!’
